If your books close on the 20th or later, you are making this month’s decisions with last month’s numbers. By the time you see profit and cash, the month is already over and the next one is half gone.
Here is a plain-English way to think about it, and a checklist to fix it.
A close is the point where the month’s transactions are complete, matched to the bank and reviewed, so the profit and cash numbers can be trusted. When it drags, three things happen. You price jobs and approve spending on a hunch. Problems that started early in the month, such as a customer paying slowly or a cost creeping up, stay hidden for weeks. And your lender, partners or buyer see numbers that feel unreliable.
Most slow closes are not an accounting skill problem. They are a sequencing problem. Everyone waits on someone else, and work that could happen during the month piles up at the end. A fast close works backward from a fixed date, with each step owned by one person and due on one day.
Day counts are working days, so the 10th is a realistic target for most months. The point is not the exact number. It is that every step has an owner and a date, and that the owner gets the explanation, not just a set of reports.
Ask three questions. What day did we close last month? Which step finished last, and why? Who explains what changed, and in how many lines? If nobody can answer, that is the first fix.
I began my career in equity research at ISI Group in New York and served as an in-house CFO before founding Veritas. At Veritas, I bring that discipline to the owner’s side of the table: books closed on a schedule, then a plain-English read of profit, cash and what to do next.
